Post Vacation Detox + My Top Tips

So I’ve been gone for a minute. But for good reason! My boyfriend and I took a trip to Ireland for a wee vacation before life gets crazy with work, holidays, and school. It was a week and a half of delicious food, not working out, and running from place to place. So needless to say my body was ready for a post vacation detox when I came back feeling a bit fluffy and less glowwy.

Whenever I go on a trip I find myself feeling so out of place when I get back. Don’t get me wrong though, this trip was so amazing, wonderful, beautiful and pretty life changing. As it was my first trip out of the country I found it so breath taking. It really gave me some perspective about our world. (More on perspective in a future post) 

After feeling this way post trip so often, I wanted to do something about it. So I’m here today to give you my top tips and go-to recipes for getting back into the game post holiday. 


My Tips for Lifestyle


  1. Recognize that you may not be looking yourself. If you’ve strayed from your diet or haven’t hit the gym as routinely as normal you may be feeling bigger or just not like you did when you left.
  2. Give yourself a good week to get back into it. If you had a morning/evening routine try to return to it. Vacations for me take me right out of my routines. Which is fine because I definitely believe in getting out of your comfort zone. But setting up routine after a trip always helps me get back in the game.
  3. Don’t ignore rest. So on vacation, I definitely don’t recommend going for a nap or a rest when you are jet lagged. A good workout and plenty of water are good for that. But when you get home for your trip I say take all the naps you need. If you have the time to get some extra rest then do it. Whether true or not it makes me think I’ve made up for the lost sleep.
  4. Take the day off when you get back. You probably think that you’ve taken too much time off work or have been gone from your life for too long. But if you have the PTO or option then definitely take that day after you return off. You won’t regret it since this day is good for rest, rejuvenation, and routines. Otherwise you’ll leave feeling like you need a vacation from your vacation. And hey! what difference does a day make?!




My Tips for Fitness


  1. Start your fitness routine at the beginning of the week. For this last trip we returned on a Thursday. I had the intention of doing my regular Friday workout the next day but found it totally hard to focus. That’s why I recommend starting the workout the next week.
  2. Utilize rest days. Your body is probably going from vacation mode back to workout mode. So if you are feeling sluggish and want to take an extra rest day then do it. Then try to get back to your normal routine by the next week.
  3. Cardio when you’re feeling tired. This is a personal tip for me. When I’m feeling tired, the last thing I want to do is train with weights and circuits. So when I’m getting into a droopy rut I  like to go for a run on the treadmill or do some resistance on a stationary bike.

My Tips for Food


  1. Increase fiber in your diet.
  2. Less refined foods.
  3. Drink lots and lots of water.

All these tips are designed so that you can detox your body. The fiber will get things moving if you’ve felt like you strayed a lot from your diet.

Incorporating less refined foods like sugars, gluten, and packaged goodies always help me feel like I’m returning to my diet. If you normally eat those foods then this shouldn’t be an issue. Personally these foods cause a lot of inflammation and digestive issues so I’m keen to avoid them. But like everyone else I like to indulge so when on vacation I dabble in some of these more refined things. So I’m happy to return to my more bare bones diet at home.

Water. Water. Water. We are all perched about drinking water and how good it is for you. Because really it is. We are made up of mostly water so we need it to hydrate us, replenish cells, and keep us energized. Try drinking the actual amount you’re supposed to in a day and see how energized you feel.


Recipe Time!


My Favorite Detox Salad. This salad is my go to for healthy fats, greens, crabs, and umami flavor. I love adding miso in different parts of this recipe for that satisfying flavor.

Ingredients:

  • green leaf
  • edamame
  • strawberry
  • pepitas
  • Miso Sweet Potatoes-
  • 1 large sweet potato
  • 1/2 t miso paste
  • 1 T avocado oil
  • 1 t maple syrup
  • salt and pepp
  • Dressing-
  • 1/4 c tahini
  • orange, juiced
  • 1 1/2 T miso paste
  • 2 t tamari soy sauce
  • 1 T maple syrup
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 inch of ginger, minced
  • Water to thin

Method

  1. Start by prepping the sweet potatoes. I like to peel mine and dice it into strips or cubes. Stir together the oil, miso and maple syrup. Coat the sweet potato in this mixture and place on a lined baking sheet. Place in a 400 F preheated oven for 10 minutes. Check halfway and toss then cook until browned.
  2. For the dressing just blend all the ingredients or stir vigorously together. This recipe makes more than you need for one serving so you’ll have extra left over. You’re welcome!
  3. Once the sweet potatoes are cooled and the dressing is mixed, toss everything in a bowl and serve the dressing on the side. Happy detoxing!
